Why see Candide?
Leonard Bernstein's Mastery
With music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics from a variety of writers including Stephen Sondheim and Dorothy Parker, Candide is one of the 20th century's finest and most beloved operettas. Playing at Philadelphia's Forrest Theatre this spring, the story of the globetrotting titular character and his quest for happiness is anchored by classics; 'Glitter and Be Gay', 'Make our Garden Grow', and one unforgettable overture.
What is the story?
Based on Voltaire's 1759 novella, Candide is all at once a love story, a drama, a thriller, and a tragedy rolled into one merry-go-round of ever-revived characters who populate our hero's journey. From living in a swanky castle as a Baron's illegitimate son to a beggar on the streets to earthquake-causing heretic and much much more in-between, prepare to follow a dazzling story that fills the auditorium with glee and wonder.
